You may think a website for DIY Self-watering planters is a strange place to find a marketing consultant.
It is.
It all began when I was caught in the economic meltdown of 2008.
After 20 years as a Product Designer in the auto industry, I found myself in need of a new career.
I remembered reading an article in Backwoods Home about freelance journalism and thought I'd take a shot at it.
I've always had lots of interests and hobbies and whenever I discussed them with people they usually seemed interested and impressed with how much information I had put together.
I had already written the Instructions for my Self-Watering planters and they were well received by the people I gave them to, so I started there.
This web site was the eventual result.
Oddly enough, the money didn't just start rolling in by the truckload.
I realized that what I needed was to get "found" on the internet.
Soon I was learning about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and effective copywriting techniques (because you not only need to get "found", you also need to be able to convince people that your product is the one they need).
Within a couple of months I was ranking on Google's page 1 for "DIY self watering planters".
Along the way, I got a few articles published in Backwoodsman Magazine and learned about digital video.
As I learned more though, I found out that there aren't that many people who are searching for self watering planter plans. And no matter how compelling your copy is, 2 or 3 searches a month doesn't convert into much money.
In the mean time, my Wife found herself in need of change, so I set up and optimized her web site. Do a search for "Bankruptcy Attorney in Holland Michigan" and you'll find The Holland Bankruptcy Center in multiple places on the first 5 or 6 pages of Google. (Don't tell her I said this, but I did that.)
I soon found out that local businesses are in desperate need of exactly that kind of work.
And that's how BlindSquirl Consulting evolved from a DIY Self-watering planter web site into a local business marketing consultant web site.
